The Remains of one of Finest Neolithic ( 3500BC ) Burial Chambers in Britain .
A Portal Dolmen ( Cromlech in Welsh ) , with a 16 ton , 16ft(5m) Capstone ,
balanced on 3 pointed slender uprights (2.5m) of Volcanic Ash Rock ( Tuff )
Forming a chamber where the remains of the dead , of an important family , could rest .
Dry stone walls would have completed the inner structure , the whole
covered with a massive mound or cairn of stones with access to the
chamber through the door or ‘portal’ at the south end.
Used for burials over a long period , before , finally being sealed .
Final structure 36m - ( 120ft ) long.
