It is thought that the making of refractory or silica bricks ,used to line steel-making furnaces, started circa 1850.
Most of the present buildings were completed by 1929, replacing the smaller works that was abandoned by 1914.
The works were supplied by two quarries , Quartzite from near the Drumhouse and Clay from the hillside south of the works.
The quartzite was broken to a fine powder , mixed with the local yellow clay ,
moulded into bricks ,dried and fired in the 3 ‘Beehive’ / ‘Newcastle’ Kilns.
