In the 1860s the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board constructed the Pilot Beacons
- Coal Rock Beacons / White Ladies.
The line of sight through the two buttressed beacons and a third on West Mouse
marks the position of Coal Rock - a notorious isolated rock hazardous to shipping .
