Traditional slate fences are made from the offcuts and poorer quality slate .
They are rarely seen far from a quarry and outside of North Wales.
The ends of the slabs are buried and bound together by a twisted wire.
Slate pillar fences became common in north-west Wales from the middle of the 19th century.
