Skinner's Monument

A FP off the Coast Path leads up to the monument overlooking the Harbour.
It is made of pale stone and decorated with high-relief urns, torches
and, most revealingly, the prow of a ship.
Capt John Macgregor Skinner was born in New Jersey, USA, c.1760.
He lost an arm while fighting with the Royal Navy
in the American War of Independence, then lost an eye while serving in the Caribbean.
Moving to Holyhead, he became master of packet ships crossing the Irish Sea .
He was a generous benefactor to the town . Aged 70 years when he died in 1832.
