From mediaeval times St Ann's head has had a fire basket , with a small chapel and
hermitage for use by the local monks , who looked after the fire.
In the latter half of the 17th century a stone tower, with a coal fired light ,
was erected on the site of the chapel .
In 1714 , 2 lighthouses ,with coal fired lights , were built near the old disused light .
The rear lighthouse remains together with it's 20th century observation box.
