Fort Hubberston / Gelliswick Bay
Fort Hubberston / Gelliswick Bay

A view over Gelliswick Bay to the the Casemated Gun Battery , below the Defensible
Barracks of Hubberston Fort .
------
The fort was built between 1858-1863 , with 11 guns in Casemates, 8 in an open battery
above, with another 9 in an open east flank battery.
The armaments varied over the life of the fort.
In the 1870s, eight of the guns on top of the casemates were removed and replaced by
Moncrieff guns. These guns were set on carriages and operated on a counterweight system
so that they remained hidden in special concrete pits until the time came to fire them,
when they would be hoisted into position.

The defensible barracks is to the rear.
The fort was abandoned after WW1 and is now derelict.
