Rock Samphire / "Crithmum maritimum" / near Bosherston Head / an evergreen
sea cliff plant / with greyish , succulent leaves and pale greenish -
yellow flat topped flowers / has an unpleasant smell - a pungent, sulphurous aroma /
and strange flavour - very carrotty .
Culinary Use :-
The side branches of fresh green growth should snap off easily by hand / a little too
powerful for salads when raw , better when boiled or steamed for about ten minutes /
popular as a pickled vegetable in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Rock Samphire was sometimes grown as a vegetable on well-drained soils,
especially in England and France.
