St. David's Cathedral is one of Britain's oldest Cathedrals and stands on
the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by Saint David , Abbot of
Menevia , a Celtic Christian monk / built in a hollow in order to avoid the
attentions of invaders from the sea / one of the most important shrines of
medieval Christendom ( 410 - 700 AD ) - two pilgrimages to St. Davids
equaling one to Rome.
In 1181 the Present cathedral was begun and completed not long after.
The building has had a checkered history and was all but destroyed by
Cromwell’s Parliamentary soldiers / remaining unroofed for over two
centuries and falling into decay / Major restorations were carried out
between the late 18th century and the early 20th century.
