White Piddock
"Barnea Candida" . The piddock is a mollusc that has a pronounced “beak” at the front
end of its shell. It uses this feature for boring holes into relatively soft substrates,
such as soft rock , stiff clay , chalk, peat and shale.
They rely on their burrows for protection from predation, as they are unable to retract
completely within their shells .
The fringed tips of their syphons project from their burrows , to catch the minute
planktonic organisms on which they feed.
Life expectancy - 5 years.
