Bedd Morris - Standing Stone .

A 2.25m Stone , on a minor road which crosses Mynydd Carningli , on the route of an
ancient track from Newport to Haverfordwest .
The stone is incorporated in the boundary of the parish of Newport and inscribed as such.
There are several legends relating to this stone :-
One is that the stone is a memorial to a young man named Morris who was killed fighting
a duel ,over a girl from Pontfaen, on the road between Pontfaen and Newport.

The other legend is that the stone marks the grave (bedd) of a highwayman called Morris ,
who lived in a Carn Ingli cave and was caught by locals and hanged on the roadside,
the stone was erected as a reminder to others.

In November 2012 the stone was repaired and reset in its original socket.
Several hammer stones and stone flakes from dressing the stone were discovered. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal fragments established that the stone may
have been erected in the prehistoric period (Bronze Age).
