'Operation Sandcastle'

To the East of Fort Belan near the Sand Dunes at the northern end of Foryd Bay are the remains of
'Operation Sandcastle' (1955)
This involved the transfer of 16,000 German WW2 Bombs containing the nerve agent Tabum from
RAF Llandrog (now Caernarfon Airport) onto landing craft for transport to Cairnryan (Scotland).
The bombs were then transferred to boats and sunk beyond the continental shelf - north west of Ireland.
