The Western Portal is for the tunnel (172m) of the main North Wales Coast Road
completed in 1932 . Now used for Eastbound traffic.
The next Portal is for Railway tunnel built by Stephenson in 1848 for the Chester to Holyhead Railway.
Since 1989 Westbound road traffic has used the latest tunnel (658m) built as part
of the dualling of the A55 from Chester to Bangor (later extended to Holyhead).
