Inside the Church of St Nicholas and St Teilo , Penally , is a fine Celtic cross and
parts of 2 other crosses.
In the Pic :-
On the left - A fine complete early Christian carved Wheelhead Slab Cross .
The head is patterned with a pronounced central boss , decorated with a four-lobed knot
and 6 ring-twists on the arms.
The front features an interlaced ribbon design and also displays a vine-scroll of
Northumbrian type.
Unlike the Wheelhead Crosses of the Anglian type at Nevern and Carew it was
constructed from a single piece of stone .
Probably dating from the first half of the tenth century , almost a century before the
Carew and Nevern crosses.
In the middle :- is a second stone , the lower part of the shaft of a free standing Cross.
The cross is a blend of Celtic Irish motifs ( interlacing , spirals , key-pattern ), Late Anglo -
Saxon art of Northern Britain ( twin beasts , vine scrolls ) and Scandinavian Jellingee Style.
To the right:- is a fragment of the shaft of another Cross.
