Takes its name from an earlier wooden bridge on the same site which was completed during the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.
Also known as the Blue Bridge (1925 / 7 ) - a 'Bascule' type road Bridge. The two central sections of this bridge were designed to roll back and lift in the centre , for ships to sail upstream.
By the 1960s shipping had ceased on the Afon Dyfrdwy / River Dee. The bridge's lifting mechanism was removed and the roadway fixed permanently in place.
